Some things to keep in mind while looking at the schedule:
This is last year’s schedule*
The morning lecture lasts for about an hour and a half followed by a discussion section. During the discussion we work on turning the current event topic from the lecture into debate arguments.
The afternoon lecture lasts for about an hour. During the adjoining discussion section we work on presenting, responding to, and flowing the structures we went over in the lecture.
- We will break up the afternoon lectures into advanced (A) and novice (N) sections as needed.
Lab time is spent doing practice debates and researching/writing briefs.
- Every student at the ODI will do a minimum of 8 practice debates in lab. Adding this to the camp tournaments, all students will do 18 debates while at ODI. And there are plenty of opportunities to do more.
- Every student at the ODI will write a minimum of 2 briefs (researched 1-3 page documents that include a summary of a current event and debate arguments that relate to it). These briefs will be put online for all campers to use and add to throughout the debate season.
There is quite a bit of free time in the evenings. Students in the past have used this time to watch movies on the TV in the lounge, play Ultimate Frisbee in the court-yard, research in the computer lab, etc.
Food: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the Carson Dining Hall. The food is good and there are options for all diets. We regularly go on trips to the market, and we have a communal refrigerator in our lounge. The days marked “barbecue” are the days we will have lunch or dinner catered.
