As of May 15, 2012 the Oregon Debate Institute will be wait-listing applications for the high school public program. There are very few spots available in the other programs. They will likely fill by month’s end. Please send in your applications TODAY!
The 2012 ODI is the one of the nation’s premier debate and speech institutes at a fraction of the cost of other debate camps. ODI will be held from July 28-August 11, 2012. While continuing to compile a staff of champions annually, this remains one of the cheapest forensics institutes in the nation. We’ll have a variety of programs, each of which has collegiate champions and coaches leading labs and giving daily lectures.The University of Oregon competes in every one of these events at the college level. The U of O also has one of the only full service college debate teams in the nation, allowing us to offer one of the best institutes available. The institute will maintain its famed 4-1 staff to student ratio as it grows.
The Parli/Public Program: The parli/public program will run from July 28-August 11, 2012. This program will focus on short preparation, current event debate forms. The curriculum will consist of research and information organization, concise articulation of relevant facts, and overall public speaking skills. There will also be a good about of debate theory in the foundation of this program. Lectures will be on current events, government systems, and parliamentary debate theory.
The Policy/Cross Examination Program: The policy program will run from July 28-August 11, 2012. Oregon is bringing back its policy debate camp after a few year hiatus. The lecture series will focus on features of the topic and policy debate theory. Daily practice debates in front of top-level college debaters and coaches, along with individual attention to focused on your personal improvement will be the focal point of the program. Expect to leave with a set of files that allows you to roll teams all fall, and a set of skills to go with.
The Lincoln-Douglas Program: The LD program will run from July 28-August 11, 2012. The LD program at ODI will consist of case writing workshops, practice debates, and LD debate theory using all of the LD summer topics. We’ll split them into week one and week two and you’ll leave having debated each of them thoroughly. Lectures will be on everything from case writing and finding the best cards to rebuttals and effective cross-ex.
The Extemporaneous Speaking Program: The Extemp Program will run from July 28-August 4. While attending the current event lectures and lectures on research the rest of the Extemp Program will focus on speech formation and organization, citations and using them effectively, and general public speaking skills. Expect to give full extemp speeches every day, have them critiqued by some of college forensics best speakers and coaches, re-give them, and then rinse and repeat. This program will coordinate very well with either the PoFo or Impromptu second week program for a well rounded summer forensics experience.
The Public Forum Program: The PoFo program will run from August 4-11, 2012. The first of our ‘second week only’ options. the Public Forum camp will feature lectures on public forum structures, effective use of briefs and cross-ex, and doing good research. Students will attend the current event lectures, research lectures, and their own set of lectures tailored to Public Forum success. We’ll use a few of the summer PoFo resolutions to structure the research and practice our case-writing. This program will coordinate very well with the first week Extemp program for a well rounded summer forensics experience.
The Impromptu Speaking Program: The Impromptu Program will run from August 4-11, 2012. The second of our ‘second week only’ options is impromptu speaking. This is a great program for any student who wants to get better at public speaking or just conquer the world’s #1 fear. You’ll attend some of the current event lectures and have a set of lectures about all facets of public speaking. Then students will give speeches in front of top college competitors and coaches that can assist in everything from easing nerves to waxing poetic. This program will coordinate very well with the first week Extemp program for a well rounded summer forensics experience.
