Our Parliamentary (Public) program emphasizes skill development in reading resolutions, prep-time distribution, research of current events, argumentation and strategy. Students will also engage in numerous practice rounds and other speaking drills. Our institute staff, which consists of succesful college parliamentary debate coaches and competitors, is especially well qualified to deliver instruction in this young and growing high school debate activity. While Parliamentary debate is sometimes called Public debate (such as in Oregon), ODI uses the term Parliamentary debate because it is the most common term for this form of debate in the high school and college national debate community. We are very excited to be offering what we believe is a new and unique high school summer institute experience!
We feature three levels of entry:
NOVICE - reserved for first year or incomming high school competitors
VARSITY - for students with high school debate or speech experience
and
COLLEGE PREP - for incoming or current college debaters looking for a jump start on 08-09. Students in the college prep section will enjoy chances to practice and learn from one of the nation’s most consistently competitive parliamentary debate programs.
The camp also includes a short-prep mini-lab which not only increases student rhetorical ability, but also amplifies organizational and research techniques. The mini-lab is taught by National Individual Event Tournament out-round participant and camp director Aaron Donaldson. Aaron has coached numerous short-prep state champions as well as students who have broken at the national tournament.
